Free Family Film in St Andrews Park

I am delighted to bring you the news that thanks to Phoenix Films there will be Slapstick Screening in the Park on Saturday 14th September 2013, 7.30pm.

Inspired by finding out that in the 1920s and 30s there were three cinema’s on Gloucester Road, community organisation Phoenix Films decided to organise a screening in the park of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Kid’, one of the great silents from this era, the heyday of Slapsick cinema, and to work with kids at our local school to create their own slapstick film.

Having gained a grant from Bishopston Neighbourhood Partnership, the film group worked with children at Sefton Park School to create a short slapsick film ‘Stupendous Stu’s Super Silly Sefton Circus’. Phoenix films ran a free after-school filmmakers club for year 3s and 5s at Sefton Park Juniors. The children took part in all aspects of creating their own slapstick film and the result is a charming and funny short.

This work will be showcased in St Andrew’s Park along with the screening of Charlie Chaplin’s ‘The Kid’ on the evening of 14th September. The screening is free to residents and popcorn will be provided by Sefton Park PTA for a small donation. There will even be a guest speaker to tell us about the cinemas in Gloucester Road in the 20s and the comedies of that era.

Please do walk or cycle to the park from 7pm with your families, bring a rug and enjoy a lovely evening of al fresco cinema in your local park.

It was great to learn more about local residents Sarah Belfield and Bex Rose who set up the community organisation Phoenix Films Bristol in 2010. Phoenix was established to deliver filmmaking workshops to those who would not otherwise have access to this specialised training and facilities, improving self confidence and bringing a pride in their work to the young people who have created their own short films.

The pair also tutor at the BFI film Academy Bristol at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. This is a free practical, cultural and vocational course running from January to April for selected passionate and talented young filmmakers age 16-19. Bishopston Matters would like to thank Phoenix Films for their efforts, I am are sure the Slapstick screening will be a big hit with our community, I hope to see many of you there!
